Product Overview

HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protective System):

HIPPS systems are a series of components, specifically engineered to isolate the source of dangerous high pressure, in the case of an overpressure event. HIPPS is an independent and reliable Safety Instrumented System that is designed with high integrity as per established ANSI/ISA and IEC standards, in order to equal or exceed the safety performance of conventional safety valves.

Product Feature:

1.High Safety Integrity Level Certification

The system complies with IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 functional safety standards, achieving SIL3 and some solutions up to SIL4. The complete safety loop is authoritatively third-party certified as an independent overpressure protection barrier.

2.Pressure sensing loops adopt 2oo3 (two out of three) voting logic.

Redundant design for transmitters, logic solver and final elements ensures single-point faults will not disable safety functions, implementing fail safe philosophy.

3.All key components are sourced from internationally renowned brands.

The HIPPS system employs a YOKOGAWA SIL3 certified PLC as its logic solver, purpose built for HIPPS applications. Pressure sensing elements consist of SIL qualified pressure transmitters by leading manufacturers including ROSEMOUNT, HONEYWELL and YOKOGAWA. Proven across extensive industrial field deployments, these components are fully validated for harsh operating environments with hydrogen sulfide and CO2,helping minimize random failure risks.

4.Customizable

The HIPPS system supports a wide range of optional actuators and valves, enabling flexible configuration according to site utility conditions, process operating conditions and installation site requirements. Actuator options include SIL3 certified pneumatic, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic actuators, together with accessories such as valve position indicators and high flow solenoid valves. For safety shutdown valves, API 6D/API 6A certified trunnion-mounted ball valves, floating ball valves and slab gate valves are available. The safety shutdown valves can be configured with full bore construction and offer metal to metal hard seated or soft seating solutions. They comply with ISO 15848-1 fugitive emission requirements and API 6FA fire safe certification is available. Special material selections can be provided for corrosive services containing H₂S, CO₂ and other components. Suitable for process conditions such as high pressure oil & gas, CO₂ capture and natural gas applications, the system delivers reliable overpressure shutdown protection.

5.Rapid Response

Pressure transmitters detect overpressure conditions within milliseconds. Signals are hard‑wired directly to the logic solver, bypassing upper level process control systems to eliminate latency from communication forwarding. Upon receiving the close command, the actuator solenoid valve operates rapidly to close the valves. For the complete loop, total response time from overpressure detection to full tight shutoff of the valves take only several seconds. It rapidly isolates the high pressure source, suppresses downstream pressure peaks, avoids large volume process fluid discharge, and effectively protects downstream equipment with lower pressure ratings.

6.Partial Stroke Test (PST)

The system is equipped with Partial Stroke Test (PST) function, enabling online diagnosis for HIPPS shutdown valves during normal plant operation without process interruption. During test, the valve moves through limited partial travel and returns to full open position immediately. It verifies free movement of valve, actuator and solenoid valve against sticking failures. PST improves diagnostic coverage of safety loop, reduces average probability of failure on demand and maintains the system SIL 3 integrity level, as well as extending the interval for full‑stroke proof test.

7.Remarkable Comprehensive Economic Benefits

Despite certain initial stage investment for HIPPS hardware, the system delivers outstanding whole life cycle economic benefits. By rapidly isolating the overpressure source, HIPPS enables downstream pipelines and equipment to adopt lower pressure rating specifications, cutting procurement costs for piping and process equipment. It also greatly minimizes design requirements for flare and relief systems, reducing capital expenditure on flare piping, knock out drums and related facilities. For offshore applications, weight reduction of topside facilities further lowers platform construction costs. HIPPS avoids large volume process fluid flaring during overpressure events, reducing hydrocarbon loss and carbon emissions. Supported by online Partial Stroke Test (PST), planned production downtime caused by safety function proof testing can be mitigated. As a high integrity safety barrier, HIPPS significantly mitigates severe economic losses resulting from equipment damage and unplanned shutdown induced by overpressure incidents.
